A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its role in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
