The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

Context of Sentencing

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement intervened and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The judges found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
