The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a significant prize-giving event nears, you'll find a demand for the addition additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
